Louisa's Memorial Day Blog Entry

(Because Lenore is grounded, and Gage was busy, when Wendy needed a volunteer for some Saturday wandering, Louisa bravely volunteered. Louisa isn't comfortable with being on the computer herself, so this is her story as told to me once she got home. I told her I would post it for her on the blog. - Emi)

Louisa: I was very excited to get to go with Miss Wendy out adventuring. I put on one of my nicest pinafores and tried to look my very, very best.

Louisa: The car ride was so much fun!

Louisa: First, Miss Wendy and her gentleman friend said we had to go to McDonalds. And that's where they said we went, though I saw no Scottish people at all.

Louisa: Miss Wendy ordered a "Happy Meal" and I asked her if a meal could really make you happy. She said I'd see.

Louisa: And when we found a nice park to eat in, I DID see!

Louisa: I think French Fries really do make me quite happy. Though it is a bit strange that a Scottish place would make French food. Very odd.

Louisa: The park where we'd stopped was a war memorial rose garden. Miss Wendy explained to me that it was Memorial Day weekend, and that while the people in the park across the street were celebrating by having cookouts and playing loudly, different people mark the day differently, and that we would be doing so with a quiet walk through the rose garden.

Louisa: It really was a beautiful place.

Louisa: There was a beautiful fountain with a lion!

Louisa: The fountain was in appreciation of Bryand Williamson. I don't know who he was, but he must have been a very nice fellow to have such a fountain in his honor.

Louisa: We just sat and were peaceful for a little bit. I tried to think back to all the Memorial Day lessons we'd just been having in class.

Louisa: I only found one rose bush blooming, and it looked like the blossoms were about done for. Even though they weren't poppies, I suddenly found myself thinking about the poem Miss Amha had taught us for Memorial Day.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.*

I think it is a very sad poem.

Louisa: There was a fascinating sundial on the other side of the park from the fountain.

Louisa: We haven't studied these yet with Miss Simona and Miss Ahma, but I shall have to suggest it. I think I should like to build one for science class!

Louisa: On the opposite side of the sundial was a marker that read: "Dedicated to the men and women who served in the armed forces during all wars." Thinking back to my history lessons, that seemed like a great many people to dedicate a park to. I was happy someone had planted roses for them and remembered them.

Louisa: As we were leaving, I hoped that we would come back sometime when the roses were in bloom. And even though they're not poppies, they ARE red and it made me think of another poem we'd been learning from Miss Ahma for Memorial Day.

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.**

Louisa: On the ride home, we were all very quiet and thoughtful. I found myself wondering about those men and women who had died fighting for freedom and defending our country. And I hoped that other people would remember them this weekend too.

Detention With Lenore

Lenore: Miss Wendy, how come YOU have to do detention and write on the board with me?

Wendy: Well, Lenore, sometimes big kids get in trouble on the internet too.

Grounded Forever

I am in so much trouble.

Well, it was a really grand birthday present. But, I am told that you can't just invite strange people to come all the way across the country and move in. Even if they're doll people. Well, _I_ can't anyway. Though Sam is very nice, and she and Miss Wendy seem to get along wonderfully. Even though Sam is rather a different sort of doll. More different than I'd thought.

I should've asked her about riding around in Miss Wendy's purse. I should have. I didn't. Ah well.

Calla was right, Miss Simona did not like that I had been talking to secret friends on the internet. And so, after sending this post, my internet privileges are revoked. Probably forever, to hear Miss Simona tell it. We shall see.

I told her that I needed to let you, the blog readers, know what had happened. And if you don't hear from me in a month or so, please have the doll police come look for me, because I'm probably locked in a box in the basement in need of rescue.

Miss Simona is awfully mad.

And now you know what happened.

A Secret Birthday Present

(Lenore typing)

Lenore: Hmmm.... probably to the store would be best. (typing)

Calla: *yawn* Lenore, your typing woke me up. What are you typing this early in the morning.

Lenore: *whispering* I was talking to a friend, she lives very far away so the time is different. It's a surprise, and a secret.

Calla: A secret!?

Lenore: Shhhh. Yes, a secret and Louisa can't find out. No one can.

Calla: I don't think Miss Simona is going to like you talking to secret, far away friends on the internet very much.

Lenore: Come up here so we can whisper and I'll tell you everything. Miss Simona is going to like her a lot, so is Miss Wendy. Come on.

Calla: *whispering* Okay, so who is she?

Lenore: *whispering* Her screenname is JazzyBabe72, but her real name is Sam. And she's just gotten out of college and looking to relocate. I've talked her into coming here, and living with us.

Calla: You can't just invite people to move in with us, Lenore!

Lenore: SHHHH!!! She's a doll, like us. And she's going to be Miss Wendy's birthday present.

Calla: Really? Uh, aren't there plenty of dolls here already?

Lenore: Everyone here has a companion. I have you. Miss Simona has Ahma. Even Miss Wendy's dogs have each other.

Calla: But Louisa...

Lenore: Doesn't count. I was going to try to bring that nice April girl to live here, but she found a home already.

Calla: That was inconsiderate.

Lenore: *snort* Anyway, Miss Wendy's been missing having a travel companion, someone to ride around in her purse and go places.

Calla: We could do that, though.

Lenore: We'd break, and that's why she doesn't take us many places. Not like she did Mr. Gage. Sam is made of the same stuff Mr. Gage was, she won't break, and Miss Wendy can carry her around in her purse and have a companion again.

Calla: Well, she has missed Mr. Gage a lot. Wow, that'll be a great present.

Calla: Uh, but how do you know they're going to get along?

Lenore: They have a LOT in common. They both love music. And comic books. And photography. And dolls. And dogs. Believe me, I asked Sam a lot of questions, they're going to get along great!

Calla: Did you ask her about riding around in a purse everywhere? It's kind of scrunchy in there.

Lenore: Nah, they can work out the travel logistics when Sam arrives. She wants to travel, Miss Wendy wants a travel companion, they'll work it out. But I'm sure Sam will love riding around in Miss Wendy's purse. Mr. Gage did.

Calla: You're pretty smart, Lenore.

Lenore: *sigh* I try. I think, if no one finds out about this and spoils it, this might be the best birthday present in the history of birthdays.

Calla: Wow! So when will Sam be here?

Lenore: Miss Wendy's birthday is on April 19th, so a few weeks from now. Sam is mailing herself right away, so she should be here in plenty of time.

Calla: WOW! A new friend for us! A new friend for Miss Wendy! This'll be a great birthday! Good job, Lenore!

Lenore: Thanks, and SHHHH!

What Ahmas Are For

Lenore: *sigh*

Ahma: Lenore, may I join you?

Lenore: Um... sure.

Ahma: Is everything okay? How was your day of taking pictures of models?

Lenore: Um... it was okay... well.

Lenore: There was this girl. One of the models. Her name is April. She's really nice. And... her birthday is the 24th, and she doesn't have a home or anyone to love her on her birthday and it just...

Lenore: It just makes me so sad. She's so nice. I thought... maybe she could come live here, but Miss Wendy said "no". So she's all alone *sniffle* with nowhere to go, and no one to love her.

Ahma: Oh, I see. That IS very sad, having a birthday all alone like that. You are a very sweet girl to care about such things, Lenore.

Lenore: Being sweet isn't helping, though. I can't help! I can't do ANYTHING to make this better for her! *sniffle*

Ahma: Lenore, come here.

Lenore: Okay.

Ahma: Things will turn out okay for your friend. All right?

Lenore: Okay.

Ahma: Even though you couldn't give that little girl a home here, you gave her a wonderful day with someone who cared about her and made her feel like a real model. You did everything you could for her. You did your best, and that is all you CAN do, Lenore. Don't be mad at yourself for giving someone your best.

Lenore: Okay, Ahma. But...

Ahma: No, there's no "but" about it. You are a wonderful, caring little girl. And sometimes caring hurts.

Lenore: Yeah... yeah it does. *deep sigh* I just wish she had a home.

Ahma: Don't you worry, Little One. Things work out. You'll see.

Picture Day - Pt 2

Lenore: So, where are our models?

Wendy: I asked them to meet us at the Hollow, where we'll be doing the shoot.

Lenore: Oh, okay.

Wendy: You know, I could help you into the car.

Lenore: No thank you, I've got it.

Lenore: Now let's GO!

*****
Lenore: *quietly* Is that them?

Wendy: I hope so, because if there are five OTHER dolls hanging around the Hollow, that's just plain weird.

Lenore: *snort*

Lenore: Hello everyone!

Models: Hello!

The Photosessions

The blonde Binu said she just didn't feel like this was the right setting for her, and that she'd have to talk to her agent about doing outdoor shoots. Lenore said that she'd find a better setting for her and that Lenore's agent would talk to Binu's agent.

All in all, I think Lenore had a very successful first day of photographing other dolls. She and April seemed to hit it off. After everyone else was gone, and I was packing everything up, they went for a walk.

When it was time to go, I called them away from watching the ducks on the lake, and Lenore and I went home. :)

Lenore was very quiet the whole ride home, but I figure she's just exhausted. It was a big day!
